“Oh?”

“I had a lot of fun things in my life. At that time. Before things moved on.”

“You got rid of it all?”

“All of it, Fiona. I decided not to hold on to that chapter of my life. Why watch it slip away? It was easier to let it go and remember it the way it was. Plus, it all afforded me my dream studio and a place to live above the studio. How can I be upset? I get to sit on a balcony and watch the ocean. Every day. For the rest of my life.”

“You know, I sure wish there was more that could be done,” I said. “For you.”

“For Parkinson’s? Or just me?”

Demi offered me a cocky smirk.

“I think you know what I meant,” I said.

“We can wish and hope all day long, Fiona. There’s nothing wrong with it. But we have to keep moving too. You can stare at a blank canvas and envision a painting, but until you move your wrists, hands and fingers, nothing happens. Turn left up here and then go about a mile. You’ll see the place.”

I parked next to a building that had three giant signs that all read the same word.

PHARMACY

Demi told me to wait in the car.

I didn’t.

She gave me a nasty glance when I climbed out of the car.

I just smiled back.

I showed her my hands. “I’m just going for a walk. I might need something in there.”

“I’m sure,” she said.

I knew she secretly appreciated me being there.

Even if she didn’t want to admit it.

She had invited me into this chapter of her life and I crashed it hard.

Kind of like what I did to Riff’s life, huh? He casually suggested to me to text him next time I was in town. And then I just show up and don’t leave.

Once we were in the pharmacy, Demi stopped me and smiled.

“I can handle it from here,” she said. “I can get my own medication. You go look around for whatever it is you were here for.”

I lingered near the front of the pharmacy.

I needed nothing.

Other than a better grasp of what happened earlier with Riff.

I hadn’t given myself the chance to think about it.

I knew I’d end up digging too much into it.

The threat of feelings.

The first time ever with Riff.
