I had no doubt in my mind she had some kind of plan rolling through that head of hers.

Only… with Remi…

The lies can’t last forever.

Remi wasn’t stupid.

Hearing him rip into Fiona pissed me off so much I jumped in without thinking.

I should have just sat there and stayed quiet.

The urge to defend Fiona became too much -too instinctual- and I ended up between them.

Too close to Fiona.

Pissing Remi off even more than normal.

And then the texts.

How risky and stupid could we be?

Any sense of logic would tell both Fiona and I that tonight we should call it quits on this thing. This hookup. This affair. This… friends with benefits thing…

I poured myself a drink and attempted to watch some hockey highlights.

I tried to sit down but couldn’t.

I kept my phone nearby.

“Fi, where the hell are you right now?” I asked.

I took two steps toward the kitchen to get another drink and my condo door opened.

In walked Fiona.

“Fi,” I said.

“Griffin,” she said.

I put my glass down and stared at her.

The urge to run up to her to hug and kiss her almost overtook me.

“Fi,” I repeated.

“You okay?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “I mean, yes. I mean, where were you?”

Fiona snorted.

She went to the kitchen and poured herself a drink.

I got close to her.

Not too close.

But close enough.
