Guidance.

Someone to agree with him.

The best I could have offered, if I wanted to, was that Wren was a beautiful woman. A great mother. An amazing woman for putting up with Abel. And that she should be honored for the rest of her life for giving Abel two babies.

Of course Abel knew all of that.

And Lay just wanted to be an asshole and get under everyone’s skin.

So I bolted.

To go home and take a shower.

On the way home I stopped to grab a bite to eat.

My favorite bacon cheeseburger with a metric ton of fries.

I couldn’t wait to eat it.

That’s how I ended up with a sticky, sweatshirt stuck to my skin.

That’s why it took me a little bit to wrestle the shirt up to my head.

When I heard the knock at the door, I froze and threw my head back.

I growled.

Who the hell is at my door right now?

The knocking continued in that comfortable way.

You know what I mean, right?

Not a knock-knock-knock thing.

Like a food delivery. Or packages getting delivered. Or even someone passing by to talk about religion or politics.

This knocking was the sound of someone who knew me and who had been in my place before.

It was actually easier to pull my shirt back down than to take it fully off.

Especially with someone knocking like crazy at the door.

For a second I actually thought something was wrong with the building.

I caught myself hurrying to the door.

When I opened the door and saw Fiona standing there…

Remi’s sister is here?

“Fi,” I said. “What are you-”

Fiona wasn’t interested in talking right then.

Instead, she jumped forward. Into my apartment. Into my arms.

I had no choice but to catch her. Hold her.
