If they only knew that all I did now was paint for fun and sleep with my brother’s enemy, huh?

I read the email twice. Just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

I even looked over my shoulder, wondering if I had fallen in the shower and hit my head.

It was all right there.

All true.

Clear as day.

My old job waiting for me.

With a nice, fat raise to go along with it.

Clearly the work I had put in and clientele I worked with made a huge difference for the bottom line of the company. And they were just now able to actually see it.

Part of me wanted to reply with a screamingyesbecause it was a job and more money. It was familiar to me. The corporate rat race kind of vibe. And I was good at it. It kept life moving forward.

Another part of me wanted to reply with two words.Fuck off.

Or maybe go into negotiations and ask for more money. A better office. A promised contract.

Soon my head felt like it was spinning.

Suddenly pulled in a lot of directions at once.

The last time I felt anything like this was the night of that dreaded proposal.

And what did I do then?

I climbed out of a bathroom window and hurried to find Riff.

I was in a bathroom now.

Even though it didn’t have a window.

But… I felt the same as before…

I needed Riff.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

RIFF

It felt like a lifetime waiting for the final buzzer to echo in the arena.

I gazed at the scoreboard two hundred times, as though that would change the final score.

The buzzer sounded. The fans cheered for their home team.

We all skated off the ice and walked down the visitors tunnel to the wonderful sounds of drunken heckles.

A few stray pieces of popcorn flew through the air.

From the corner of my eye I saw Remi turning around.

The big guy was pissed and it wasn’t beyond him to reach up and grab for a fan if they were throwing food, drink, or other items at him.
