Ispun around from my bus seat and dangled the flask at Remi.

“Have a drink,” I said. “It’s good for your health.”

“Get that thing out of my face,” he said. “I’m not in the mood.”

“Sure you are. We all are. We’re going to the final round, man. We did it.”

“We didn’t do shit yet, Riff. Relax.”

I dropped the flask into Remi’s lap.

I grabbed the seat and swung myself around through the aisle and crashed next to Remi in his row.

He was too damn big to have someone share a seat with.

He always rode alone.

Everyone knew the rule.

Leave Remi alone.

Aside from his size, he was just a grumpy asshole all the time.

That part I had been used to since I met him.

Things weren’t great between Remi and I but we were finally at a place where we didn’t throw punches.

Fiona was back to normal after the accident.

In fact it seemed like a lifetime ago.

Fiona and I really didn’t talk or see each other that much anymore though.

Remi made it very clear we were to stay apart.

He feared I would corrupt his little sister.

Bad enough you almost got her killed…

That was his favorite line.

And honestly I just kept to myself and focused on hockey.

In some way I took the accident as a warning.

A sign from the universe.

To finish chasing down the dream.

“We’re close,” I said to Remi. “Just by getting to the finals, man, we’re golden. Everyone will be watching us.”

Remi picked up the flask and handed it back to me. “You want to drink and act like a rock star, Riff? I say go for it. You want to be a complete idiot and ruin everything? That’s your choice.”

Remi unzipped his bag.

He was going to reach for some music and zone out from the world.

Not tonight, man.
