How it happened never got answered.

Nor did it really matter to me personally.

All I knew was that the bus crashed and half the team would end up dead.

We’d never play in the final game either.

Chaos ensued for a long time too.

Memorials. Interview requests. A general sadness when anyone was near those who survived.

Most of all for me?

Losing Remi for good.

The driver of the bus didn’t survive.

There were rumors he swerved to miss a deer.

There were rumors he and Tommy were drinking while the driver was driving.

Another rumor suggested Tommy actually took over driving the bus and quickly lost control.

Or maybe the driver just fell asleep.

Or maybe…

Too many maybes.

What I remembered was falling asleep.

And then all hell breaking loose.

It started with this intense jerking motion.

I rested with my head against the window.

It suddenly felt like someone pressed their hand to my head, against the window as hard as they could.

My eyes popped open and before I could scream, I was upside down.

Out of my seat.

Slamming into the roof of the bus.

Pain in my body, losing my breath.

The screams of others…

Big, tough hockey guys and they sounded like kids screaming over a spider crawling on their bedroom wall.

A familiar sound of metal twisted and collapsing. Squeezing and crushing.

I grabbed for a seat but I couldn’t get to it.

Then a second later I was thrown down against the top of a seat.

Hitting me right in the gut, stealing my breath again.
