She nodded.

“Ever want to just take off? Just disappear and think?”

“All the time,” Demi said. “Where are you running off to?”

“I already ran,” I said. “That’s why I’m here. This is me running.”

“There’s always somewhere else to run,” Demi said. “For example, you can run to my beach house anytime you’d like. Bring your lover too. Since it’s more than obvious you two aren’t supposed to be together.”

Without hesitation, Demi reached for a pen.

Up until that point her hands hadn’t been shaking as much.

But now it took her a few tries to scribble down an address.

“I’m not joking,” she said. “It’s good to have that feeling. Knowing you can go somewhere.”

I thanked her and stared at the piece of paper.

I took a picture of it with my phone and texted it to Riff.

We have a secret place in case things get too much around here.

I meant it more flirty than anything else.

Riff replied back.

Meet you there at 7?

I laughed and shook my head.

I love you, Riff. I can’t wait to see you. Thank you for telling me everything.

I felt strange sending that to him.

Things being so real.

After all these years.

But yet…

Riff texted me back.

We just keep breaking all the rules, Fi. Now we’re texting mushy shit instead of dirty texts? I love you and I want to fuck you.

I didn’t even bother to reply.

To me that was the best way to end a conversation with Riff.

I then caught myself dreaming of Riff and I together in some beach house that Demi owned.

Sneaking away from sneaking away.

It was full of fantasy but also came with a sense of… worry?

I wasn’t sure what the word was.

But at some point, Riff and I being together could not be hidden.
