I took a deep breath.

I shut my eyes.

I nodded.

I hadto give Riff credit.

He contained his laughter very well.

Throughout the entire story his eyes widened, narrowed, giving away how hard he fought not to laugh at me.

I mean, it was kind of a funny story.

Me stuck in the bathroom window of a bar…

“So let me get this straight,” Riff said. “You had a stranger grab your ass? Some woman. Just going to town back there?”

“And that’s the part you remember,” I said. “Of course. Typical guy.”

“I’m just picturing it,” Riff said. “You stuck in a window.”

I smacked my hips. “These things are big. They don’t fit through narrow places.”

Riff looked down for a second and smirked in a much different way.

I caught myself sucking in a breath.

I felt a warm pulse between my legs.

No. Not right now. No.

“And then you just tumbled out of a window and took off,” Riff said. “To avoid the proposal from hell?”

“It wasn’t from hell,” I said. I punched Riff’s arm. “Dave is a sweet guy. Really sweet. Really nice. He’s a good guy.”

“And you’re not agood girl?”

“No!” I cried out. “I’m not agood girlat all. I didn’t know that’s where he was. With our thing.”

“Relationship.”

I rolled my eyes. “I hate that word.”

“I know you do, Fi. But guys don’t just propose…”

“Something went wrong somewhere,” I said. “I’ve been working like crazy too. Just so busy. That kind of did me in. The last… whatever. So I freaked out and you were the first person I thought of.”

“I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not,” Riff said.

“Why?”

“Well, you go psycho and think of me? Then you show up to my place? And I’m supposed to entertain you and listen to you?”

“Wow. Fucking jerk.”

Riff leaned in. “Really? Going to get nasty with me now?”

“Maybe I am,” I whispered. “You know I don’t mind nasty.”
