Mari stepped back. “Sorry. I’m just in shock. And I don’t know what Remi is going to think when he sees you here.”

“Remi told you about Riff? And me?”

The way Mari’s cheeks flushed, that was a big fatHELL YESof an answer that I ever saw.

I put my head back and took a deep breath. “This is bad. And it shouldn’t be bad.”

“Look, I know everyone has their own side to things. Everyone has an opinion and all that. I don’t have much to say in this other than I’m married to Remi. So what am I supposed to do?”

“I love him,” I said.

“Remi?”

“Well, yeah. Of course I love Remi. He’s my brother. He’s a giant asshole, but I love him. I’m talking about Riff. This whole thing… it’s real. And it happened out of nowhere for me. And Riff too. We were just fooling around, you know?”

Mari shook her head. “No, I don’t know. I don’t think I want to know. Because I know how Remi feels about it.”

I sighed. “His feeling shouldn’t matter in this. Riff is a good guy. He takes care of me. And I don’t mean that in a—”

Mari put her hand up. “I can’t hear this, Fiona. I’m sorry. It doesn’t feel right for me. Or for Remi. Or for you. There are no sides to choose in this. Here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to go for a walk. A very long walk. You hang out here and wait for your brother.”

“You don’t have to do that,” I said. “That’s not fair to you. To kick you out of your own place. He’s going to want to see you first.”

Mari nodded. “I know. But he needs to face you first. You need to face him. Whatever is going on, you two have to work it out. Or try to. Or something.”

“I’m sorry, Mari. That you’re in the mix of it.”

Mari reached for my hand. “Hey. We’re family. It’s not always easy or fun.”

“You’re my sister-in-law,” I said.

“That’s right.”

“It never really hit me like that before. I’ve always been busy and distant. It’s all I’ve known. You’re my family, Mari.”

A wave of emotion moved through me hard.

I thought of all the things I could have and should have done.

Getting to know Mari more.

We could be best friends.

Visiting Remi more.

Trying to knock down that ice wall he lived behind.

Getting to know Riff more than just great sex and falling in love.

Mari hugged me and then left.

The game was already over by then.

TheApple Catslost by three goals.

Just a total failure of a game.

Embarrassing.
