It pained me to say it.

I wasn’t even sure if I meant it.

Remi just stood there, jaw like stone.

No emotion on his face.

“So is that what this is? I have to choose? My brother. Or the man I love.”

“You already made your choice, Fiona,” Remi said. “Now you’re just here to justify it.”

Now that dagger was in my back.

I turned away from my brother and left.

Talking to Remi only made things worse.

It felt cliché to say things were falling apart.

But… it was just too true to ignore.

Chapter Thirty-Six

RIFF

Iheld what felt like the thousandth ice pack to my face.

It helped with some of the swelling, but I still felt everything throbbing.

My right hand curled up and looked awkward. It was the only way I felt anything like relief from the pain. Hitting Remi in the face over and over was like punching a steel beam over and over.

Abel walked in the main part of the locker room, freshly showered and dressed, bag hanging off his right shoulder.

He looked at me and nodded.

A slight frown on his face.

I pulled the ice pack off my face.

“Do I have a mark right here?” I asked, pointing to my entire face. “I feel like there’s a mark there.”

Abel put his bag down and took a seat next to me.

His elbows on his knees.

Rubbing his hands together.

“No, man,” I said. “Get home to your wife. To your family.”

“Wren is sound asleep,” he said. “Izzy too.”

“You don’t need to do this.”

“I want to do this,” he said. He looked at me. “Give me something, Riff. Make it make sense to me between you two.”

“It’s a long story, Abel,” I said. “And it doesn’t feel fair to tell it without Remi here. There’s too many ways to look at it.”

“Give me a condensed version.”
