I thought about it for a few seconds.
“I’ve secretly been sleeping with Remi’s sister and he found out.”
Abel’s jaw dropped.
“Now that’s what I’m talking about!” a voice yelled from behind me.
I hadn’t realized Lay was in the room with us.
“That’s what the fight was all about?” Abel asked.
Lay stepped over a chair and plopped down on the other side of me.
He put his arm around me and pulled me close.
“I knew something was up,” he said. “I smelled it. I sensed it. I just knew. You were having great sex. Hopefully you still are. Letting Remi’s sister lick all those wounds, huh?”
“You’re a fucking asshole,” I said.
“Yeah, Lay, you are a fucking asshole,” Abel said. “But this wasn’t just because of that. It’s deeper.”
“It’s a lot,” I said. “I’m being respectful here, guys. I’m not talking about this without Remi. We both went through a lot.”
“But it all revolves around his sister,” Lay said. “Past. Present. Future. Only a woman could make what happened on the ice tonight happen. That’s it.”
I nodded. “Yeah, you’re right, Lay. I don’t want Fi to feel any guilt though.”
“Fi,” Abel said. “Wow.”
“Just tell me one thing,” Lay said. “The hotel.”
I looked down at the floor.
Lay dropped to his knees. “You are one fucking legendary man, Riff. You were banging Remi’s sister in a hotel.”
“Something like that,” I said.
“Wow,” Abel said again. “I’m speechless.”
I stood up. “It’s not just that, okay? It was in the beginning. We had an arrangement. When she was in town, we would get together.”
“Hold up,” Abel said. “This has been happening…”
I nodded.
Lay pointed at me. “So when Remi got his shoulder operated on. Fiona was in town.”
I nodded.
Lay put his hands together. “You’re my hero, Riff.”
“Holy shit,” Abel said.
“It was just casual,” I said. “Both of us wanted it. We had it worked out. This time though, it was different. She showed up and…” I shook my head. “I’m not getting into details here. But it’s something else now. It’s serious.”
“Serious?” Lay asked. “Is she pregnant? Or…?”
“He’s in love with her,” Abel said. “I know that look. He fell in love with her. And she fell in love with him. And now Remi knows and he can’t handle it. He can’t accept it.”
