“Hence the fight,” Lay said. “Makes perfect sense now.”

“I don’t know what happens from here,” I said. “But I’m not going to wait around here. Coach and Mags are livid. Remi and I embarrassed ourselves in front of the world. But all I want to do is go home to Fi.”

“I don’t know what to say,” Abel said. “I’ll respect the situation. I’ll… I mean…”

“You do whatever you need to do to be happy,” Lay said. “That’s my advice. This love stuff? If this stuff is real then you can’t just give up on it.”

“Well, I can’t believe this… but Lay is right,” Abel said.

“I am?” Lay asked. “I was just saying cliché stuff. I really just want him to go have sex with Remi’s sister again. Or if this doesn’t work out, maybe she can come my way. I mean, if she likes hockey players and all…”

Abel stood up and walked toward me to make sure I didn’t attack Lay.

I had no desire to fight Lay. Playful or not.

I was done fighting.

At least for the moment.

I opened the condo door.

When I heard a noise, I thought someone had broken in.

Maybe it’s Remi. Wanting to finish what we started.

I found Fiona in the kitchen.

A bottle of whiskey on the counter.

Her sitting on the counter.

Feet and legs dangling.

Her face sad and tired.

She’s been crying.

“Drinking?” I asked.

“Actually I haven’t,” she said. “Not even a sip.”

“Wishful thinking then?”

“More like avoiding comfort for head on collisions.”

“You talked to your brother?”

Fiona nodded. “Went to see him actually. Was surprised to come back here and you weren’t home yet.”

“I hung around,” I said. “Not sure why. Talked to Abel and Lay. Nobody really knows what’s going on or why. I made it clear I wasn’t going to go into details without Remi around. We all have our own way of looking at this.”

Fiona looked at me.

She looked ready to cry again.

“Your face…”

I dropped everything and went to her.
