I went outside and sat in a comfortable chair.

A small deck with a long set of stairs led the way to the beach.

Right to the sand.

Right to the ocean.

It felt like being close to the end of the world.

The perfect place to hide.

Even though I wasn’t sure exactly what I was hiding from.

Nothing about what happened should have surprised me one bit.

I put my head back and looked up to the stars.

Billions. Trillions.

So many stars at once.

Giant clusters.

Like the flickering of diamonds.

Out of reach. Yet visible.

Metaphoric?

Demi came out onto the deck carrying two teacups.

Her hands shaking furiously.

I patiently waited for her to reach her right hand out for me to take the teacup.

She sat next to me.

She gave me a smirk.

I glanced at the tea.

When I caught a whiff of the tea, I inched back.

“Just take a sip, Fiona,” Demi said.

She took a sip of hers and smiled.

I took a sip of my tea and felt the burn of the hot whiskey.

“Is there any water in this?” I asked.

“Who cares?” Demi asked.

That got me to laugh for a brief second.

I took another sip or two.

The tea was warm. The whiskey warmer.
