“And it never made you angry?”

“To see him happy? No. To see him with a wife and children? Never.”

I stared into my teacup.

Hearing that story really didn’t do much for me.

Not that I was looking for an easy answer.

There was no easy answer.

That’s the point of the story! There are no easy answers in life.

Especially with love.

Even when love feels so easy.

“Is it wrong to hide, Demi?”

“Never.”

“You sure about that?”

“Why do you think I brought you here? Everyone deserves a chance to hide.”

“Nobody knows I’m here.”

“How does that feel?”

“Relaxing. But only a little.”

“Then enjoy it.” Demi rose up from her chair. “I have to get some sleep. Plenty of tea inside.”

“And whiskey?”

“My little secret,” she said, placing a shaking finger to her lips.

“Demi. Thank you for all you’ve done.”

She shook her head. “You did it all yourself.”

“Great. More blame.”

“Fiona. Take the blame. All of it. Ball it up. Own it. You’re strong enough.”

“You know, blame hurts others.”

Demi held out her hands.

They were shaking as though she stood in Antarctica without gloves on.

“Everyone is in pain,” she said. “Everyone is suffering.”

“That doesn’t comfort me at all.”

“You want comfort? Get a blanket. Or another man who knows nothing about you.”

Demi winked and went back inside.
