The two of us ended up going for the same parking spot outside the gallery.

Facing each other.

Remi staring daggers at me.

I hurried out of my car and ran to the gallery door.

Remi grabbed my left shoulder and pulled me away.

He grabbed the handle and pulled.

“Fuck,” he said. “Open up!”

He slammed his hands on the glass.

“It’s closed,” I said. “Demi has weird hours.” I got closer to the front window. “None of the main lights are on. She’s not here.”

I backed up and looked up.

There was a chance Fiona was in Demi’s apartment.

“She’s not answering her phone,” Remi said.

“Nope,” I said. “Hasn’t responded to any of my texts.”

“Or mine,” Remi said. “I’m going to call the police.”

“For what?”

“To find her,” he said. “What if something happened to her? What if…”

Remi choked on the words.

What if she got into an accident?

I nodded.

Remi turned away.

Okay, Riff. Think. You love her. You should know where she is.

If she was going to run off and hide…

“Man, I just want to knock you out right now,” Remi said.

“That won’t find Fiona any easier,” I said.

“It’ll help me blow off some steam.”

“You don’t think we’re already headline news as it is?”

Remi turned. “Yeah?”

“Teammates throwing punches? Even people who aren’t hockey fans are involved in this mess, Remi. So many rumors. Over money. Over a woman.”

“You think I care?”

“Have you talked to your agent yet? I haven’t talked to mine. I don’t want to know what’s going to happen. The team. The league. We’re fucked.”
