“Fuck!” I yelled as I hurried to pull to the side of the road.

The car came to a skidding stop.

“I’m going to kill you,” Remi said. “I’m going to…” He looked around. “Wait…”

I broke away from Remi.

In one motion I turned off the car, grabbed the key fob and my phone, then I hurried outside.

Remi was a second behind me.

He pointed across the street. “I know that place. The pizza place. That statue on the roof.”

“What about them?”

“I…” Remi looked around. “What the fuck, Riff?”

I swallowed hard. “Sorry, man. I had to do it.”

“You said you weren’t driving in a circle!”

“I lied. Just like I lied about banging your sister.”

Remi jumped at my car and I thought he was going to climb over it.

Instead he started to chase me.

Around my car.

The two of us running, like we were kids playing tag at a park.

Remi moved with big, lumbering strides.

I had more speed than him.

He wasn’t going to catch me.

We ended up right where we started.

Me outside the driver’s side door.

Remi outside the passenger door.

“You drove in a circle!” Remi yelled.

“Yes. I drove in a big circle.”

“So, you don’t know where Fiona is.”

“I know where she is,” I said. “There is a beach house. She’s got to be there.”

“Then why didn’t you drive there?”

“She wants this, Remi.”

“She wants what?”

“This,” I said. “You and me. Talking. Together. She wants us to get along.”
