Yet I stood in a sunroom filled with easels and paintings, holding a cup of coffee, windows opened all around, listening to the soft sound of the ocean.

Demi’s place was certainly cozy.

She joined me and reached for my coffee cup.

“No way that’s still warm enough to consume.”

“It’s a bit cold,” I said.

“You’re not one of those psychos that drinks cold coffee on purpose, right?”

“What’s wrong with iced coffee?”

Demi took the coffee cup from me. “Your generation is weird.”

I laughed.

I followed Demi to the kitchen.

Now that coffee was done being served, next came the alcohol.

Or at least the offering of it.

I politely turned down the offer of wine… or something stronger.

Instead of that, I got changed into fresh clothes, brushed my teeth, and pulled my hair back.

I felt refreshed.

But still… distant.

Hidden.

Ignoring any and all notifications on my phone.

Both Remi and Riff had stopped texting me.

I wasn’t sure if that was good or bad.

Maybe they both took the hint that I wanted to be left alone.

I looked in the mirror at myself.

I leaned closer.

With my hair pulled back, I noticed the super-tiny little speck of a scar just below my right ear.

That came from the accident with Riff.

A scar that nobody else knew about or could see but me.

Amazing that one millimeter of a scar could bring back so many memories. New and old.

I heard a knock behind me and looked into the mirror.

“You better not be questioning your beauty,” Demi said with a smile.

“Demi, I think I’m questioning everything.”
