“Pull over, Riff. Let’s go again then.”

“Give it up, Remi.”

“Tell me what you realized. You said it a minute ago. You realized something.”

“About you,” I said. “And Fiona. You’ve known all along. And I don’t get it. Am I that bad of a guy? We were best friends. We did everything together. Now I’m wondering if it was jealousy. Maybe you thought Fiona and I would end up together and leave you behind.”

“Jealousy? Me? Never.”

“I think you’re full of shit, Remi. Something about it…”

“Don’t do this. Don’t analyze things.”

“What did I do that was so wrong?”

“You almost got my sister killed!”

“It was a car accident. I took the blame. I took the heat. But you know what? Last time I checked, she and I were sneaking around because of you.”

“You didn’t have the balls to come talk to me.”

“Talk to you about what? Ask permission to hang out with your sister?”

“Why not?”

“I…”

“Right,” Remi said. “You broke guy codes. Friendship codes. That’s what you did. It’s implied, Riff. You do not fool around with your best friend’s sister.”

“I don’t get that. Why not? You know me. You know who I really am. I’m good for her. I’m good to her. She’s good to me.”

“We’re not talking about this. There is nothing between you two.”

I shook my head. “Denial.”

“Denial? About what?”

“I’ve been fucking your sister for years!”

Remi made gigantic fists and stared at them.

Growling.

Literally growling.

“There’s the truth!” I yelled at him. “You can’t stand to hear it. Oh well, man. Every single time she was in town, what do you think happened? But you won’t even let me tell you about it.”

“Why the hell would I want to hear about my sister’s bedroom activity?” Remi asked.

He cringed as he asked that.

“Because it paints a bigger picture here.”

“Here we go with that again. The painting thing. Was that your influence too?”

“You really have an issue with her painting? Who the hell are you, Remi? You know what? Screw this…”

I cut the wheel to the left.
