Remi’s huge frame hit the passenger door and I thought it was going to explode open.

I turned off the main road, onto a bumpy dirt road.

“Where are you going?” Remi asked.

“I’m not taking you to her then. Not if you’re going to act like this.”

“Riff, I swear on my life…”

“What? You’re on your last nerve with me? She wants this to happen. You and I to be in a car together.”

“I don’t care what she wants. I just want to know she’s okay.”

“She is okay. I told you that. She’s with Demi. At Demi’s beach house.”

“You don’t know that for sure,” Remi said.

“Trust me, Remi. I know her. I know Fiona. I know her better than you do.”

“Don’t say that.”

“Remi. Just face it. You’ve known all along. You can’t admit it to yourself. That’s why you hate me so much. Even more now. It just builds on itself. You can’t let the past go and now the present is weighing on that. You’re carrying a lot.”

“I’m going to be carrying you in a minute,” he said. “When I kill you and then have to bury you somewhere.”

“Tough guy,” I said. “All these years. The tough guy. But I think you’re a big wimp. You punch like a wimp. That’s for sure.”

“That’s it!” Remi roared. “Stop the car right now. We’re getting out again.”

I started to laugh.

That pissed Remi off even more.

My car suddenly jerked forward a little and then back.

I thought I hit a rock or something.

Then the car stopped.

At the last possible second… I realized something.

“What are you doing?” Remi asked.

“Remi, we’re out of gas.”

“Pop the hood,”Remi barked.

“Gas doesn’t go there, moron.”

“I didn’t say it did. I’m just trying to fix this piece of shit car.”

“It’s out of gas. I was too busy fighting with you to realize it.”

“For how much this thing costs, doesn’t it have a warning sound? Or someone to follow you and fill up your tank?”

Or maybe I just didn’t pay attention on purpose.

“Great,” Remi said. “Now what? You know what? Fuck it. I’ll call for a ride.”
