“We can get gas for the car. That’s not an issue.”

“Oh, I think it’s a big issue.”

“Have you thought about this? What you’re going to say to your sister? How you’re going to approach this?”

“Yeah,” Remi said. “You need to stay out of it. Stay away. Don’t add to the issues.”

“I love her.”

“Stop saying that,” Remi growled.

He stomped toward me.

We were facing off once again.

“This entire thing is a joke,” Remi said. “You did this on purpose. And I fell for it. Too worried about Fiona to think straight for a second. Now here I am. Lost in this funhouse bullshit game of yours.”

“Why don’t you just wait here? I’ll go for a walk and find a gas station. It’s not like we’re in the middle of nowhere, Remi. There’s places all around us. You sit, think and cool off.”

“Fuck you, Riff. I’ll go get the gas for the car.”

“It’s fine, Remi.”

Remi pushed at me.

I tumbled back and almost fell down.

I smiled. Then I started to laugh.

“You think it’s a joke?” Remi yelled.

He stomped his massive feet on the dirt road and walked by me.

A massive man-child for sure.

Which made me smile.

All the years between us.

Best friends.

Biggest enemies.

I went to my car to get the key fob and my phone.

I locked the doors, then broke out into a jog to catch up to Remi.

When I did, I cut in front of him and turned, moving backwards.

“Get away from me, Riff.”

“Can’t do that,” I said. “We’ll get the gas. Get my car running. Then we’ll fill up the tank. Okay? We’ll go to Demi’s beach house and you can see for yourself that Fiona is fine. I promise you she’s probably painting.”

Remi let out a growl.

“She’s probably happy too,” I said. “In some old clothes. Her hair pulled back and up into a messy bun. Little specks of paint on her cheeks and a smear of paint on her chin. Looking so fucking beautiful. Impossibly beautiful. Like, how can a woman look so beautiful all the time?”

Remi launched his hands out and grabbed my shirt.
