“You should have saved the others,” Remi said. “Who am I to have a second chance? You could have saved ten others. But you saved me.”

“You’re like a brother to me,” I said. “I would do the same thing again right now. And whether you like it or not, Remi, I knew where you were in that bus and I knew you were alive. I knew how to get you out of there. I didn’t know about the others. Were they hurt? Able to be moved? And do you think it doesn’t hurt me? Thinking about that? I pulled you out of that bus and then it explodes? You don’t think that shit is on me?”

I suddenly felt my jaw quivering.

Remi offered his right hand. “Just get me out of here, Riff.”

I started to pull Remi up.

A few seconds into it, I gasped and pretended like I was going to drop him.

He let out a scream that made it all worth it.

I laughed.

He reminded me how much he hated me.

I pulled him to the top of the hill.

Once he had his feet there and had balance, he pulled away from me.

His left hand grabbed my shirt and his right hand balled up into a fist.

“Go for it, man,” I said. “It won’t change a thing. After all these years? I still love you, Remi. My best friend. Even though you’re such an asshole. And I didn’t ask your sister to marry me. We’re nowhere near that. We’re enjoying being in love. And having sex.”

Remi growled.

He brought his right fist forward slowly and touched my chin with it.

Time stood still for a little bit.

Then Remi pulled me in for a hug.

“Goddammit,” he growled.

I laughed. “I guess this means we’re good now, huh?”

He broke the hug and stood up.

He dusted off his jeans and flexed the shoulder he had surgery on.

“We’re not anything,” he said. “We need to get gas and get out of here.”

“That’s the plan,” I said. “We can skip this hill, go down and around.”

“Good idea, Riff.”

As we walked down, side by side, I said. “You know, I have to tell everyone I saved you again.”

“Fuck off.”

“I’ll tell them there was a snake or something. Or that you saved a kid. And then I helped out. I won’t make it too rough on you. Oh, and I won’t tell them how much you scream like a little girl.”

Remi clamped a hand to my left shoulder and looked at me. “You think we’re friends now, Riff? After this little adventure?”

“We’ve always been friends. You’ve just been too dumb to thank me for saving your life.”

“Fine. Thanks for dragging me out of that bus. Okay? You saved my life that night, Riff.”
