I looked over at her and I smiled.

“Have you ever turned down a ton of money for your own happiness?” I asked.

“This is my happiness,” Demi said. “I built my happiness. The way I wanted. Can I share a secret?”

“Please.”

“Money made during unhappiness is money spent trying to find happiness. And you always end up where you began.”

“That’s good advice.”

“I’m not sure it’s advice, but rather a statement. I’ve lived that my entire life. I’m happy. I’ve always been happy.”

“You never wanted to travel the world and show off your paintings?”

“Who’s to say I haven’t?” Demi grinned.

A subtle reminder that there was still a lot about her I didn’t know.

Meaning I needed to stay close.

Maybe not here at the beach house but I needed to stay close.

“You’re family to me,” I blurted out.

Demi touched my hand. “I’m aware. But you’ve got other things to deal with at the moment.”

“Oh?”

Demi smiled even bigger.“There are two big, hunky, bloody hockey players inside my house, looking for you.”

When I sawRiff and Remi standing next to each other -in Demi’s beach house- I almost passed out.

I touched the wall next to me and took a deep breath.

They were both beat up from their fight.

But there were also fresh wounds on each.

Yet they stood next to each other, not fighting.

“How?”

That was the only word I was able to say.

Remi glanced at Riff.

“Go ahead, big guy,” Riff said.

Remi’s jaw tightened. “I thought you were with him. He thought you were with me. We tracked you down.”

“You came here together?” I asked. “Like… in the same car…?”

“We even ran out of gas and had to walk to a gas station,” Riff said.

“What?”

My head tilted to the side.
