“That’s a story you can talk about later,” Remi said to Riff.

“So I get dibs on the story?” Riff asked. “All parts of it?Saving… you…”

Remi lifted his left fist.

Riff playfully stepped to the side.

What the…

“What the fuck is this?” I asked. “You two hate each other. You two want to kill each other.”

“We did fight,” Riff said, pointing to the fresh wounds on his face.

“Any chance I can talk to my sister alone?” Remi asked Riff.

“Yeah, sure,” Riff said. “Just as long as I get my time with her.”

Remi curled his lip at that comment.

“How about a drink?” Demi offered Riff. “You look parched. I have everything. Come with me.”

Demi offered a shaky right hand to Riff.

He took her hand with both of his massive hands and they walked away.

My brother stood fifty feet tall.

Big and mean.

Always with that pissed off scowl on his face.

“You didn’t reply to any calls or texts,” he said.

“No. I didn’t. I honestly didn’t want to hear a thing from anyone.”

“Well, your plan worked.”

“I had no plan, Remi. I’ve been hiding here. Tired of hearing it. From everyone.”

Remi’s jaw tightened again. “He knew right where you were. I showed up to his place and he knew what to do. I was lost, Fiona. It really hurt me too. It made me feel like I didn’t know my own sister. I couldn’t find you.”

“Am I supposed to apologize for that?”

“No. You’re not. I’m apologizing for it. I put you in a position where you couldn’t tell me things about your life. I have no excuse for that.”

I blinked fast. “How hard did Riff hit you?”

“Nowhere near as hard as I hit him,” Remi said.

Then he smirked at me.

My own brother.

Showing a flicker of positive emotion.

“So you two are friends now?”

“It doesn’t work that way.”
