“Why not?”

“I’m not sure, Fiona.”

“Okay. Are you two going to stop trying to kill each other?”

“For the most part,” Remi said.

“Meaning?”

Remi stepped closer to me. He touched my arms. “It’s simple right now for me. You’re in love with him. He says he loves you. Who am I to get in the way of that, right? Except…” Remi smirked again. “If he does anything to break your heart, I will kill him.”

“I don’t think you have to do that,” I said. “If something goes bad with Riff, then it’s done. It’s over.”

“I’m talking if he does something stupid to you, Fiona.”

“Oh, you’re talking about like cheating or something? Trust me, Remi. If he even thinks about touching another woman, I’ll cut his dick off and use it as a paintbrush to paint a message for him.”

“That sounds painful.”

“I might look cute but I can be mean,” I said.

“I guess that runs in the family,” Remi said.

“So you two are actually okay now?”

“I’m not sure whatokaymeans. But things were said. Things were talked about. I think I have no choice but to face some stuff on my own. Plus, I don’t have time to deal with you anymore, Fiona. I’m a married man. I’m happy with my own life. I’ve got things to do.”

“Oh, right. I’m just suddenly not important now.”

Remi and I smiled at each other.

He knew he would always be my big brother. And that I would love him.

And I knew I’d always be his sometimes annoying little sister. And that he would want to fight the world for me.

He wasn’t thrilled that I fell in love with hisbest-friend-slash-enemy.

Maybe I wasn’t thrilled about it either.

But I loved Riff.

Riff loved me.

“I guess I need to figure out how to get out of here,” Remi said. “Riff was my ride.”

“I can’t picture you two in a car,” I said. “Alone.”

“It was an adventure. The two of us racing and fighting to get to you. You scared the hell out of us, Fiona. I mean, Riff was calm. He had all the confidence in the world he knew where you were.”

“That’s how Riff is all the time.”

“It’s fucking annoying,” Remi said.

“Does someone need a ride?” Demi asked. “I was just going to go back to the gallery.”

“You were?” I asked. “Why?”

“To check something,” Demi said.
