Remi’s nostrils flared. “Say that again?”

“Yeah. He proposed to me.”

“So that’s why you’re here? To tell me you got engaged?” Remi looked ready to explode. “This fucking guy didn’t have the balls to talk to me first? Who is this guy? I never met him. You think you’re going to get married without me meeting the person?”

“To be fair, Remi, that’s what you did to me,” I said with a smirk.

That pissed him off even more. “My situation with Mari was different. It was…”

“What? You get to make excuses and I can’t?”

“Fiona. Engaged…?”

I slowly started to shake my head. “No.”

“No?”

“No, Remi. I’m not engaged. He took things too far. I didn’t see it coming. The poor guy proposed to me in front of his family.”

“Oh, shit,” Remi said.

“I panicked. I ran to the bathroom and climbed out the window.”

“You did what?”

“Just shut up for a second, okay? I climbed out of the window. I called him later and broke things off. We weren’t that close at all. I don’t know where he got the idea from to propose. So between that and some work stuff going down I decided to take a ride.”

“Here. To see me?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I felt bad if I was passing through and I didn’t get in touch with you. I knew it would piss you off.”

“True,” he said. “And that’s it? You sure?”

“I’m sure,” I said.

Mixing the truth with some lies helped to dilute the anxiety I felt when I stared into my brothers eyes and knew I was sleeping with his enemy, but I didn’t care.

Yeah, maybe Riff almost got me killed one time… but that was such a long time ago…

I finished lunch with Remi, dodging as many questions as I could.

I left a lot for him to assume.

And I just nodded.

Never really admitting much, but still lying because I had the chance to tell him his assumptions were wrong.

Remi hugged me tight and told me not to be a pain in the ass and that was the end of it.

No real admission or not if I planned on lingering around or was going back home.

Just that I had been through something intense with Dave and the surprise proposal.

And that my job sucked.

Sucked so bad, I lost it!

That’s right, Remi.
