The funny part was - I was telling the truth about Fi.

She and I were just hanging out.

It was fun to be near her.

She wasn’t like anyone else I met before.

These other girls worried so much about their hair and clothes and acted in such a weird way at times. Which I totally understood. Everyone our age was worried about everything. Carefully walking that tightrope into what appeared to be adulthood.

I left Murph’s garage and drove fast.

Really fast.

If I couldn’t booze it up, then at least I’d be able to drive fast.

Take my anger out that way.

A short while later I waited for Fi to show up with Maggie.

Maggie was the only other person in the world who knew about Fi and I chilling together.

This was a big risk.

Remi was my best damn friend in the world.

Overprotective of his sister, which I understood.

But I wasn’t out to fool around with Fi and leave her behind.

Remi would never understand that though.

It was just one of those things.

I had known Fi forever.

I’d known her as long as I’d known Remi.

And I wasn’t sure what was happening between us.

Just hanging out. Talking. Cruising.

Telling dumb jokes.

Flirting a little.

Last time, I kissed her cheek when I said goodbye.

Just to feel it all out.

No big deal, right?

As I sat in my car, I got a text.

From Polanin himself.

Good to know the bench will be nice and warm for me when I get a break. No hard feelings though, Riff. I’ll make you a deal. When I get signed, I’ll make sure the team hires you to clean the toilets in the arena I play in.

“Fucker,” I growled. “You stupid… fucker…”
