A reminder every few minutes about a big deal at hand.

All the deals were big ones.

When he finally placed his phone down, he smiled at me.

“Tell me about your day,” he said.

“The usual,” I said. “Not much I’m allowed to talk about. Although something did happen with Bethany.”

“That lunatic? I don’t get why you have her around.”

“It’s actually a funny story.”

“How is anything funny about that woman? She’s a loser, Anna. A bum.”

“Steven. Please. Don’t call her that. She’s…”

“What? Your friend? She can’t be your friend. She works for you.”

Steven’s phone buzzed against the table.

“Ah, damn,” he said as he stood up. “It’s my father. I have to take this.”

He rushed from the table and I ate alone.

I didn’t mind it.

The silence.

The food.

The wine.

It was almost like meditation for me.

Letting the day drift off my shoulders and my mind.

After dinner, I took a shower and even shaved my legs.

I walked into the bedroom wearing nothing but a towel.

Steven sat shirtless in the bed, his right leg bent, staring at the television screen.

Watching the news.

He loved flipping through all the national news stations and comparing the stories they were telling.

“This towel doesn’t seem to fit me,” I said.

“Well, you haven’t been to the gym in how long?”

I shut my eyes for a second.

“What I meant was that I feel like I should just take this towel off,” I said. “Or let it fall…”

I pulled at the towel and it dropped to my feet.

“Oops,” I purred.
