At the same time, we both smiled and shook our heads.

I have her in a hotel room.

All to myself.

We’re alone.

We can do anything we want…

“Let’s start by you telling me what you’re feeling,” she said. “About being here. Knowing you won’t be participating.”

“How do you think it makes me feel?”

“I asked you.”

“Take a wild guess how it makes me feel. Flying across the country. Going to be sitting around this hotel room. Nothing to really do.”

“I don’t know, Joe. For some that sounds relaxing. A break from everyday life.”

“Ah,” I said. “So you’re criticizing my feelings.”

“When did I say that?”

“You’re comparing me to others, Anna. Excuse me…Dr. Autumn.” I lifted an eyebrow. “You’re comparing me to someone who works a nine-to-five at a desk. Right?”

“I never said that at all,” she said. “You thought it. You spoke it.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning you’re harboring that, Joe. You know you should feel more grateful than you are.”

“Yes. That’s it. You cracked the code. I’m an ungrateful piece of shit.”

I laughed.

Anna’s cheeks flushed a little.

“Let’s dig deeper, Joe. Find the source of all these events.”

“What events? You’re here because I said so.”

“Does that make you feel powerful? Like you have control over me?”

I sat up a little more. “You love twisting words around, don’t you?”

“Where’s the rest of the team right now?”

I curled my lip. “They got the night off.”

“To go out? Have fun? And you were ordered to be here?”

“With you.”

“Doesn’t seem very fair, does it? You were suspended from hockey. Not living.”

I swung my feet off the bed and stood up. “I hate this psychological bullshit, Anna. Okay?”

“Just means I said something that matters to you.”
