“Okay,” I said.

The vacuuming outside the door continued.

I looked at the door.

“Is the sound bothering you?” Anna asked.

“No,” I lied.

I felt like someone was cutting my nerves one by one with child scissors.

“I’m going to just let you talk,” Anna said. “Anything I say you’re going to twist and accuse me of twisting.”

“That’s what you do, Anna,” I said. “You know what? You’re digging around, looking for something that fits into a textbook, aren’t you? You want to find something wrong, call it out, and feel good. But let me throw something at you.”

Anna nodded.

I inched even closer to her.

Way too close for someone who was supposed to be a psychologist to me and nothing more.

I leaned down.

Inches from her face.

Close enough that I wanted to steal a kiss and she wouldn’t have the chance to stop me.

“Joe?” Anna whispered.

“What if I just wanted to do it?” I whispered back. “What if I just saw that guy, decided I didn’t like him, and just put him through a window? No reason. No purpose. Just for the fuck of it?”

We stared at each other.

The vacuuming continued outside the door.

It didn’t sound like it was getting any quieter either.

It was actually starting to drive me nuts.

“No response,Doctor?” I whispered.

“Plenty to respond to,” Anna said. “Just thinking.”

“About?”

“Your tough guy blanket statement.”

“Excuse me?”

Anna turned and strutted away.

She went back to the desk and grabbed a pen and began to take notes.

“What are you writing?” I asked. “About me?”

No response.

“Hey,” I called out. “You have to tell me what you’re writing.”
