I tossed my bag to the bed and reached for my phone.
I took a deep breath.
“Anna,” I said. “Time to be a professional. A grown up. Time to face the reality here.”
Right on cue it seemed, my phone rang.
Bethany calling.
I answered.
“How’s it going?” Bethany asked. “Did you fly on a private jet? Did you fly withhim?”
“Bethany, is everything okay?”
“Just the normal here,” she said. “Going to answer my questions?”
“I’m here professionally,” I said. “I’m alone in a hotel room right now. Looking at notes.”
“Did you fly on a private jet?”
“Yes.”
“With…?”
“The owner of the team.”
Bethany exhaled. “You’re kind of a big deal, Anna.”
“Are you at the office right now?”
“I’m actually on my way out. I have everything caught up. Billing. Insurance.”
“Perfect. I want you to take tomorrow off. Fully paid. No need for you to be there.”
“What about the phones?”
“I’m sure you can figure that out. You deserve a day off.”
Bethany laughed.
“What?” I asked.
“Do you want me to say it?”
“I’m not sure.”
“Something happened there and you’re feeling guilty so you’re giving me the day off.”
“That’s what you’ve got?”
“So what happened?” Bethany asked.
“I’m going to hang up now.”
“Uh-huh. I bet you are.”
