My phone rang again.
I saw Herbert’s name on the screen.
Any other time?
Ignore.
But right now?
“Hello, Herbert,” I said.
“Anna? What’s going on there? You’re shut down?”
“I’m not shut down. I’m closed for the day. I’m out of town for business.”
“Business? I thought the nut cases came to you!”
“You know, that’s a really disrespectful thing to say.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Are you offended? Maybe you can talk to yourself in the mirror then.”
I definitely regretted taking the call.
“I cannot have a business in my building not open,” Herbert said.
“You have zero right to tell me how to run my business. I pay my bills on time, Herbert. And at this point, you’re going to force my hand to contact a lawyer.”
“Yes! A lawyer! So we can part ways.”
“Or sue you for harassment.”
“Harassment? How am I harassing you? I’m making sure my property is safe.”
“You know your property is safe, Herbert. And making derogatory comments about my patients is not okay either.”
“Oh, relax a little. We’re all crazy. Some just pay someone like you to tell them so.”
Herbert laughed.
He expected me to laugh.
Instead, I ended the call.
I quickly texted Bethany.
If Herbert tries to contact you in any way at all, I want you to tell me and then contact the police.
I suddenly had the temptation to leave the hotel.
Not just my room.
But the hotel itself.
Fly back across the country to where I felt at home and had the necessary distance from Joe.
Easily explain to Ellen that I had a legal issue with my landlord and medical files.
Blah… blah…
