“Seven figures?”

Herbert threw his head back and cackled. “How about seven bucks?”

“How about I call my lawyer because this is starting to feel like harassment?”

“How about I get everyone a drink?” Bethany offered. “Or maybe you and I, Herbert. We can go out? What do you think?”

“Bethany,” I said. “No.”

She looked at me. She lifted an eyebrow.

I shook my head.

With my eyes I said,You are not going to fuck the landlord to get him off my back!

“Anna, can we talk privately?” Herbert asked.

I saw the lumbering figure appear at the door and open it.

Joe entered the office and Bethany’s eyes went right to him.

Her jaw slowly began to drop. Her head slightly tilting.

“If you’ll excuse me, Herbert, I have a session,” I said.

“Another crazy, huh?” Herbert asked as he turned. When he saw the size of Joe, he stepped back. “Holy Christ. You’re… wait a second…”

Herbert pointed at Joe and looked at me.

“He comes to talk to you?” Herbert asked.

“I am not allowed to talk about that.”

“I will,” Joe said. “I talk to Dr. Autumn. That a problem with you?”

Joe moved closer to Herbert.

Oh god… no… he’s going to throw Herbert through the window!

“I’m a fan,” Herbert said. “I love hockey!”

“You watch hockey?” Bethany asked Herbert.

“Of course I do,” Herbert said. “Why?”

“You seem like the type that would watch old crime shows and cheer for the bad guys,” Bethany said.

“This guy is a bad guy!” Herbert said. “He’s a defensemen. An enforcer. He’s a fighter. He knows when to play dirty. He’s not afraid of anything.”

“Don’t forget I’m also currently suspended,” Joe said. “Do you know why?”

“Oh, I know why,” Herbert said. “Guy got mouthy, huh?”

“Actually, the guy was bothering a woman,” Joe said. “I’m not a fan of that. You know what I mean? When assholes try to take advantage of women. I hate that. When they show up unannounced. When they talk down to a woman. It just makes me… want to be violent.”

Herbert’s face turned white.

“I think we’re all out of our element here,” I said. “Joe, you can step into my office. I will be right with you. Bethany, you can go back to the phones. Herbert, you are my landlord…” I paused and looked at Joe, just to make it clear. “… but you need to leave. And you need to call me and make appointments.”
