Part of it.

Hell, I imagined Anna as everything.

Hockey would suddenly become the second thing on my list.

I’d show up, practice and play, collect my paycheck, and rush home to Anna.

I had years and millions of seconds to make up for lost time.

That included kisses. Touching her. Tasting her.

Fucking her…

Anna rolled to her back and her eyes opened.

When she saw me, she shut her eyes and smiled.

“Torn?” I whispered.

“No,” she said. “Amazed.”

“By…?”

“This entire moment,” she whispered. Her eyes opened again. The smile didn’t fade. “Wasn’t sure if I was going to wake up alone and feel sad over the dream I had.”

“Not a dream, baby,” I said. “But it could still be a nightmare.”

“No,” Anna said. “You wouldn’t hurt me, right?”

That felt like someone stabbed me in the chest.

I wasn’t sure if that was her being flirty in the present or her heart protecting herself from the past.

“I would never hurt you, Anna,” I said.

“I feel like there’s abutat the end of that,” she said.

Fuck. We know each other too well already.

“Last night.”

“Was amazing,” she said.

“You came back from getting water and you were different.”

“Tired.”

I touched her face. “You know white lies don’t work between us. Never have. Never will.”

“Joe…”

“It’s okay, baby. I’m here. We need to be able to talk.”

Anna laughed.

“What’s so funny?”

“Us. Talking. Considering what my job is. Considering how we connected again.”
