I kept my distance.

“What do you think happened?” Anna asked. “We need to talk about it. What you said…shit…”

I looked over my shoulder and Anna was on her knees.

She climbed to her feet.

She pulled herself along the boards, her feet going in any and all directions.

There was no chance of her ever catching up to me.

Or getting closer to me.

I simply skated across the ice.

Anna turned and leaned against the boards.

“You’re wrong,” she called. “You’ve got the whole thing wrong, Joe. And if you’ve been living with it since things-”

Anna dropped to the ice.

Ass first.

I saw her wince in pain.

She put her head back, looking ready to cry.

“Told you to just leave me alone,” I said.

It pained me to not rush over there and help her up.

Was I being completely unreasonable?

Of course I was.

A part of me wanted this moment to be the defining moment when she walked away.

When she left.

Again.

For good.

But this time – forever.

Let her paint me as the evil asshole who broke her heart.

That’s what she thought anyway.

Even though I showed up. And she was gone.

I could even smell the gasoline-laced exhaust from that bus…

I wasn’t sure that part was true.

But it made for good effect to justify my actions.

Anna wiggled on the ice for a few seconds, her ass swaying left to right as though she were painting the ice.
