“A thing.”

“Yeah. A thing.”

“It’s late.”

“It’s nine.”

“Nine is late.”

“Nine is late for old people,” Steven said with a smile. “We’re not old.”

“We’re not young.”

“Closer to being young than we are to being old,” he said. “Want to come with me?”

“To hear you schmooze people into spending money? No thanks.”

“Ouch. I take that personally.”

“You should.”

“I hope you don’t treat your clients like this. Don’t worry, you’ll always have me. I’ll spoil you.”

Steven winked.

I smiled with a slight cringe in my body.

He poured himself a glass of scotch and waited for his company car to arrive.

When the driver texted him, he let me know and then was gone.

Sometimes I didn’t mind having the place to myself.

I had a dirty secret…

I loved trashy dating reality shows.

I knew if Steven found out, he’d make fun of me.

That was okay.

Steven still had a stuffed animal under the bed from when he was a kid.

Everyone had their secrets.

It was a part of life.

I scrambled through the apartment to make some popcorn and pour a big glass of wine.

Then I put on the next episode of the show.

Part of my brain loved just how horrible it was.

Part of my brain studied the way humans acted and reacted.

It was part fun, part work.

And a lot of buttery popcorn and delicious wine.
