I worehis shirt and sat across the counter from him.

I felt the heartbeats in my eyes as I stared at him.

Shirtless.

Drinking a beer.

I reached for my beer.

Smiling as I took a sip.

Sex rolling through my veins.

My body still tingling fromeverything.

“So… these notes,” Joe said.

“No.”

“I’m just intrigued. That’s all.”

“Those are technically private, medical records, Joe.”

“And it’s just us here. I think we’ve broken a ton of rules as it is. Right?”

“First off…” I shook my head. “I need to get dressed and cleaned up. And I need to take all that stuff back to my office.”

Joe swiped his folder off the counter.

He stepped back.

“Joe.”

“Just wondering what you think of me.”

“It’s private.”

“It’s about me. And now you know everything.”

I titled my head. “Right. Because of me?”

“Losing you. Not having you.”

“You could have called me.”

“You could have found me,” he said.

“So we both fucked up, Joe.”

“Does this mean I can play hockey now?” Joe asked. He held the folder up into the air. “What else do you want to know? I confessed it all, Anna. Plus, you know me. You know how I am. I’ll defend those I care about with my life.”

“Okay, fine. The guy you tossed through the window. You were defending women he was bothering. You care about those women?”

“In that moment I did. I feared something bad was going to happen. That he was going to say something. Or what if he touched them? Right?”

I was not going to agree with him…

“See? I’m right. Should I have hit him? Pulled him away? Maybe. But thrown through a window gives everyone a story. Meaning… everything I do has a purpose.”
