“It’s a great idea,” I said. “Why is he here?”
Anna snapped her fingers and pointed at me.
“Shut up, Joe,” she said. She looked at Bethany. “Why is he here?”
Bethany shook her head. “I don’t know. He just showed up. And he walked through the office like he owned it.”
“Is he drunk?”
“No. I don’t think so. He’s just… mad.”
“Then let me go in there first,” I said. “I’ll calm him down.”
“I will handle this,” Anna said. “Both of you stay away. Stay out here. That’s the final answer. Got it?”
Both Bethany and I nodded.
Anna walked backward to her office, pointing at both of us.
We both stood there like obedient animals.
The second Anna went into her office, Bethany and I both started to walk toward the office.
Bethany stopped me though. “Wait. We have to talk about this.”
“About what?” I asked.
“Who are you to her?”
“Everything.”
“Be real, hunky guy. Are you just fucking, or what?”
“Who the hell are you to ask me something like that?”
“I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on here,” Bethany said.
“What are your thoughts on Steven?”
“Piece of shit. I hate him. I hated him from the second I met him. She was kind of stuck with him if you ask me. They were just together. You know?”
“No.”
“Convenience I think. She always had that spark in her though. Like something else was out there. Are you that something else?”
I nodded.
“Damn her then. For waiting so long to get you.”
“Look, I’m not talking about anything to do with Anna and I. Got it? I’m here to make sure she’s okay. To protect her.”
“Yeah? Well that’s what I’m doing too.”
Inside the office there was a booming voice.
Bethany grabbed my arm.
Her eyes went wide.
