While Steven sat in the back of the ambulance receiving medical attention, I sat in a chair in the front of the office, the other officers seated in front of me.
“Call me Bart,” one said.
“Call me Corey,” the other said.
I nodded.
“We know there are medical and privacy matters at hand here,” Bart said. “But we need to know as much as possible.”
“We technically have a confession from Joe? That’s his name, right?” Corey asked.
“Yes,” I said. “The truth is that this isn’t a medical situation at all. Steven is my ex. Joe is my…”
“You said he’s a patient,” Bart said.
I nodded. “Yes. And…”
“Oh,” Corey said. “So your ex was here and your new…guy… showed up and hit him.”
“It wasn’t exactly that simple,” I said. “Look, I don’t know where the law bends for circumstances, but Steven was being unreasonable. And aggressive. With his words.”
“Did he make a move toward you at all?” Bart asked.
“No. But he was demanding I marry him.”
“He can demand anything he wants, right?” Corey asked.
“It wasn’t that simple. He did point at me and walk toward me. That’s when Joe stepped in. Joe simply grabbed Steven’s arm and pushed him out of the way.”
“When did he punch him?” Bart asked.
His judgmental eyes pissed me off.
This all felt so cliché too.
My ex-boyfriend and my current boyfriend…
“Joe put his hand out. He didn’t actually swing.”
“Explain that some more,” Corey said, lifting an eyebrow.
“I don’t know what the intent was,” I said. “But Joe put his fist out. Steven ran into it. Okay? That’s what I saw. Steven then fell to the ground and crawled behind a chair. And even then, he said if I would marry him, he’d walk away and not call the police.”
Bart and Corey looked at one another.
Corey stood up first. “We’re going to talk to your secretary next.”
“Of course,” I said.
I stood up and went into my office.
I saw the tipped over chair that Steven had dramatically crawled over.
Of all things for Steven to do…
And yet it didn’t surprise me all that much.
That was how Steven acted.
