All the time.

And all those times he made me feel so uncomfortable as I sat there and he berated a waitress or someone holding an elevator door for him, I would just look down at my feet. I would pretend this wasn’t my life and that things were going to change soon.

Except I never made any changes.

I focused on work.

Somehow I let Steven get intertwined into my work.

As though I needed him to do my job.

Which was far from true.

The two officers returned to me.

“Well, Bethany told us just about the same story,” Bart said.

“She just added that your ex was acting belligerent,” Corey said.

“He’s an asshole,” I said. “Am I going to lie and say I felt threatened?” I shrugged my shoulders. “I wasn’t sure where it would have gone if Joe hadn’t come in. But I guess if Steven had attacked me and then Joe attacked him, Joe would be a hero right now. Not in handcuffs.”

“We’re just doing our job,” Corey said.

“I would assume you have plenty to figure out here yourself,” Bart said with a stern look. “The ex situation. A current patient hitting an ex. You sleeping with a patient. Who just so happens to be a professional hockey player.”

I swallowed hard and lost my breath for a second.

Bart rolled up his sleeve and showed me a tattoo of theSOLA Empirelogo on his forearm.

“I played on their minor league team,” he said. “Got called up to one game one time. Only time I ever played professionally like that.”

That was all Bart had to say to me.

Ethical boundaries. Privacy boundaries. My reputation.

Everything that could blow up in my face… was. And would continue to.

And I deserved it.

I did this all to myself.

From the second I saw Joe’s name…

I wanted him.

I wanted to get close to him.

I thought I wanted to torture him, but I wanted to know what he had been doing without me.

And to find out he was angry and miserable without me?

That felt good.

Really. Fucking. Good.

“Hey, are you here?”

I turned my head and saw Bethany.
