“Dr. Autumn?” Bobby asked.

“Anna. My Anna.” I looked all three of them. “My Anna. Always has been and always will be. We go way back.”

“There is some serious ethical concern here, Joe,” Clarence said.

“I don’t care. If Steven wants to make this into something, I will. I don’t care. If Ellen or her husband want me gone, I’ll go. I’ll sign anything you want me to sign. No fights. No worries. I get how this is a business thing. I’m not stupid.”

Clarence and Sophia looked shocked.

“Christ, what is wrong with you?” Bobby asked me.

“I’m in love. That’s what’s wrong with me. I’ve known Anna longer than you can possibly imagine. Should I have done something when I saw her and knew she was going to be my psychologist? Sure. I didn’t though. And you know what? It worked out. Anger or not, I’m keeping things simple. What Steven was saying to her. Threatening her. I wasn’t going to stand for it. And for the record, I did not punch him. I put my fist out and he walked into it. If I did punch him? His nose would have shot out the back of his head.”

“With respect, those are the comments you need to stop making,” Sophia said.

“I won’t,” I said.

“Can I talk to Joe alone?” Bobby asked. “I need to clear some stuff up.”

Clarence made a gesture to Sophia for the door.

I put a hand out. “That’s okay. Won’t be necessary. I’m leaving.”

“Joe,” Bobby said.

I walked to his desk. “Bobby. I’m not covering a thing up. Ellen has more than half a brain. She understands. Steven won’t do a thing either. He won’t drag it out. It makes him look weak. He’s trying to scare everyone. So I’ll go back to what I said a minute ago. If the team wants me gone, I’ll go. I won’t fight for contracts or money or anything.”

That didn’t make Bobby happy.

I turned and the two lawyers were smiling.

They were getting paid a ton of money to just stand there.

“Joe!” Bobby called out. “Don’t leave. Come back here and sit down. Let’s make a plan. Whatever you want to do.”

I was already out the door.

Out of the office.

Outside.

I looked at my phone.

Two words came to mind.

Hockey practice.

I didn’t want to deal with potential legal issues.

I didn’t want to deal with anything.

I wanted hockey. And I wanted Anna.

I pictured Anna sitting up in bed, looking at her phone.

Worried. Scared.

Avoiding me while we slept together.
