I finished my vodka.

She was quick to pour more.

I didn’t get a chance to tell her no.

“This next drink is for the future,” she said. “It’s bright, Anna. May not feel like it. But it is. It’s kind of like when you take someone home from the bar. And you wake up the next morning. You remember being drunk. And you know you have to turn around to see who the person is. You hope to everything it’s not someone ugly…”

“I get where you’re going,” I said. “Cheers.”

She drank hers fast again.

For me, I didn’t get a chance to drink.

Why?

Because from the corner of my eye, I saw Herbert arriving.

I downedthe rest of my vodka.

Bethany quickly reached for my cup.

“That’s enough for you,” she said. “Let me handle this guy.”

“Nope,” I said.

I looked at Bethany and smirked.

She took a deep breath.

Knowing she should stop me.

Also knowing I needed this.

Herbert arrived in the office and opened his arms.

Looking for a hug?

“What do you want?” I asked.

“To finish what we started. You agreed. You’re leaving this place.”

“Oh. Right. In a moment of total chaos. You get what you want, Herbert.”

“I’ve got all the paperwork ready to go! You’re out of your lease! No penalties. Fines. Nothing! And here’s the best part. I’m going to write you a great review. Or whatever. And if you need a reference for a new place? I’m your guy. I’ve got your back! Isn’t that great?”

“You think this is great, Herbert?” I asked. “My life is a mess. I’m losing everything around me. And you think it’s great.”

Herbert held up a piece of paper. “It’s all right here. You’re done! You get to walk away for free! Free, Anna!Free…”

I saw his mouth puckering up to scream the wordfreein my face one more time.

And before I knew what I was doing, I channeled my inner-Joe and I swung with my right hand.

I hit Herbert in the jaw.

Not really hard enough to do much.

But it sure as hell shocked him!
