Chapter Forty-Three

JOE

I leaned against a jagged rock, arms folded, staring out at the ocean like I was figuring out the meaning of life.

There was no damn meaning of life.

No point to it either.

And, no, it wasn’t some sad thought in my head.

It was the truth.

Life?

You just… lived it.

Whatever got thrown at your face or feet, you handled it.

But every now and again something - or someone - would show up and change everything.

Everything.

Another name for Anna.

With her, I was happy. I was a different person and I enjoyed every second with her.

The ironic part?

Without her… I was a mean hockey player who made millions.

If I’m ever going to play hockey again.

I smiled at that thought.

A guy like me would always have a team to play for.

Even if I was thrown onto the third line of some team, paid under seven figures a year, I would have a job.

Every team needed guys like me.

Big. Mean. Defiant.

Hockey didn’t seem to matter so much.

This thing with…

“Anna,” I said.

I looked to my left.

I spoke her name again.

“Anna…”

Not because I was thinking about her - even though I was.

I said her name because I was looking right at her.
