I put her back on her feet.
We stared at each other for a few seconds.
“It’s always going to hang over our heads,” I said. “What happened. Never really knowing it all. Because we both just…”
“We both hurt one another.”
“We did. So let’s undo it.”
“Undo what? The past?”
“Yeah. Come on.”
I took her hand and walked with purpose.
Anna stumbled. “Joe! What are you going to do?”
I looked back at her.
Never sure of something more in life - wanting and needing her love for the rest of my life.
I smiled.
“You’ll see, Anna.”
Chapter Forty-Four
ANNA
Joe tookme to a bus station.
I stared at the grouping of buses.
Then I started to shake my head.
“I don’t see any other way,” Joe said.
“You’re insane.”
“Insanely in love with you,” he whispered as he slid his arms around me.
He pulled me against him and kissed my neck.
“What’s the plan now?” I asked.
Joe’s hands moved to my hips and he gently pushed me forward.
“Go get a ticket. And leave.”
I turned around. “What?”
“We’re going to redo the past, baby. So you need to get a ticket. Then you’re going to get on the bus. Tell yourself if I show up, you’ll get off the bus and be with me. Isn’t that what went wrong last time?”
“Last time… that was both of us, Joe. I didn’t have to get on that bus last time. I could have waited.”
Joe shrugged his shoulders. “Are we doing this or what?”
“Can’t we just go back to your place? Or just runaway together?”
