“After we fix this mistake,” Joe said.
He gave my ass a quick swat.
“So I just buy a random ticket?” I asked.
“I’ll watch,” he said. “Then we’ll see what happens.”
“And if this bus starts moving…?”
“Then you’re going on a road trip, baby.”
I couldn’t believe I was not just entertaining this idea, but going along with it.
Walking across the parking lot to a building to buy a bus ticket.
A bus ticket to where?
The lady behind the counter stared at me like I was crazy as my eyes scanned all my options.
I finally settled on Seattle.
A very long bus ride to Seattle at that.
Which meant if something went wrong here and I got stuck on a bus…
I handed over my credit card to pay for the ticket.
Why not a plane? Right? If I want to go to Seattle, just take a plane.
We should be at an airport, right?
Except what happened in the past didn’t take place at an airport.
It took place at a bus station.
I had a ticket to Seattle.
I didn’t look back as I walked toward the bus that would hopefully not take me to Seattle.
My heart raced a little.
This entire thing…
I stood outside the bus, debating if I was seriously going to get onto it or not.
After all, all those years ago, I could have easily just gotten off the bus. Or not got on it at all.
I could have waited for Joe.
Imagine life if I did that and he showed up…
“Need help with anything?”
I looked up at the driver of the bus.
“Seattle,” I said.
“I’m your ride,” he said. “You don’t have any luggage?”
