“I’m curious, Joe. If I had to venture a guess, I would say what happened with that gentleman and the window wasn’t the first time…”

“What are we doing here,Dr. Autumn?” I asked. “You know the answer to this question.”

Anna’s cheeks blushed.

I shook my head. “You want me to answer this for myself. You want me to create a pattern in my own head so my eyes pop open. So I have this breakthrough and I decide to change my life.”

“Is that what you think you need to do, Joe?”

“Is that what you think I should do?”

“I’m just here to talk and help,” Anna said. “I can’t tell you what to do. I can only tell you what I see.”

“Okay. What do you see?”

“A skilled professional hockey player who makes a lucrative living,” she said. “Seems like a nice position to be in. However, money isn’t the cure all in life. I think many of us think it is. And actually a lot of people who fall into money or make money end up feeling the same as always.”

“So you think I’m sad?”

“Are you sad?”

My lip curled. “I’m not sad, Anna. I’m annoyed.”

“Why are you annoyed, Joe?”

I stood up.

Anna looked up at me.

Damn, she’s still as beautiful as ever, isn’t she?

She hasn't changed much.

Which is amazing.

I can still see her as eighteen.

But she’s a woman now.

“Joe?” Anna asked.

I pointed at Anna.

And I said two words.

“Ice cream.”

Anna clicked her pen. “Ice cream?”

“That’s right, Anna. You want to talk aboutviolence? Let’s talk about it.Ice cream.”

That’s when it all connected for her.

She clicked her pen again and began to pack up her bag.

“Oh, is our session over? I can’t tell the ice cream story? The story of how I used violence to defend you?”

“I said we were going to talk about the present, Joe.”
