Okay… maybe there was one person… but she vanished a long time ago.
Chapter Two
ANNA
I closedthe last folder of the day and stood up from my desk.
As I started to look out the window to remind myself a world existed outside the four walls that consumed me so often, the office door opened.
A little bell rang. A digital bell.
Coming from Bethany’s phone.
That was followed by the sound of a woman’s voice calling out,Let’s get wasted and fucked!
Bethany pumped her fists into the air and began to dance into my office.
Shaking her hips and rolling her shoulders.
While no music played.
Maybe in her head, but certainly not out loud.
“Another day in the books,Doc,” she said to me.
“Can we pretend to show an ounce of professionalism?” I asked.
“I’ve been professional all day long,” Bethany said.
“Yes, you have. You managed a hectic day for me.”
“Everyone was seen. Appointments have been made for follow-ups. All the paperwork has been filled out and filed. We should totally get drunk right now.”
“Weare not doing anything,” I said. “Other than going home. Our separate ways.”
“You never want to hang out with me,” Bethany said. “Is it because of my age? Because I’m older than you? Does that bother you?”
“No. Does it bother you?”
“What? That I chose to drop out of college to marry a guy who turned out to enjoy other women more than me and I stupidly let him drain my bank accounts, which left me in debt for years… until I finally decided to take charge one day and—”
“And travel Europe to sleep with dozens of men to return home a new woman and take charge of her life,” I said.
“You’re not supposed to finish my sentences,Doc.”
“And I hate when you call me that.”
“Excuse me,” Bethany said. “Dr. Autumn.”
“Anna is fine.”
“I know. I just like teasing. Trying to loosen you up.”
“Which won’t happen,” I said.
Years of college, training, work, traveling, and everything in between, I finally established my own practice and I took pride in that.
Bethany was my right-hand woman.
