Anna pushed from the table and sighed.
“The game is over,” she said. “I thought I could see you and… I don’t even know. This is an ethical nightmare. I’m referring you to someone else. I’ll write up a report and figure out what to say. I promise it won’t make you look bad. I’ll take the blame or whatever. Okay? That’s the best way to handle this. Hey, look at me. Taking care of all the messes I made! Well, at least one.”
She let out a nervous laugh.
A terrified laugh.
She looked ready to cry again.
I moved toward her.
She turned to walk back to her desk and I grabbed her wrist.
I stopped her and pulled her toward me.
Just inches from me, she looked up.
“Anyone who can’t get hard for you, Anna… they must be fucking dead. You got that? You have nothing to worry about when it comes to that. And don’t you dare take the blame for it either. Just look at yourself in the mirror and look at who are you. Whoever this fucking clown is, he’s a loser.”
Anna pulled herself away from me.
“Okay, Joe, we’re done here,” she said.
She stumbled away from me and walked toward her office door and opened.
“I’ll be in touch, okay? I’ll get everything sorted out. I think it would be best for both of us to just forget about today all together. Is that okay? Can we do that? Okay. Good. Talk to you soon.”
Anna stepped out of her office.
“Hey, Anna,” I called out.
She appeared once again. “Yeah?”
“You’re trying to leave your own office,” I reminded her.
Anna stepped back into her office, stood as tall as she could, and swallowed that.
“I knew that,” she said. “You have to go. So go. Right now. Go!”
It had been a while since I felt a smile wanting to creep across my face.
I held it back as best I could.
Right up until I had to move directly past Anna.
One last look into those eyes of hers… and I fucking smiled.

ANNA
I’m not goingto think about it.
Not for one second.
I looked around my office.
Everything had just happened in there, so I played it smart.
