“I think I take offense to that. You’re supposed to be…”

Anna pointed at me. “We’re just two people here, Joe. Nothing else.”

“Now why is that? All of a sudden there’s this change of heart with you? You want to get a drink with me? You’re walking a fine line.”

“Am I?”

“You never know what I might do next.”

Chuck put a beer down in front of Anna.

One in front of me.

He gave us both a wink and wandered off.

Anna lifted her glass to her lips.

I leaned toward her. “Does your boyfriend know you’re here with me?”

Anna gasped, then started to cough.

She put her glass down and jumped back from the bar.

I grabbed for her and placed my hand to her back.

She grabbed my right hand and clutched it tight as she started to catch her breath.

“Are you okay, Anna?” I asked.

She looked at me, taking deep breaths. “Why…”

She curled her lip.

“Fair question, no?” I asked.

“He doesn’t know I’m here,” she confessed. “Only because I’m not sure where he is so I couldn’t tell him.”

“You think he’s with strippers?”

“Joe.”

“We can’t talk about it? Everything you said? I hate what you told me about him.”

“Hey, I have an idea,” she said.

“What?”

“I’m going to chug this beer, order another, then we’re going to play darts.”

“You suck at darts though.”

“Just wait and see my skills now.”

Anna suddenly became the old Anna again.

And I felt like the old Joe too.

We sat next to each other, eyes maybe flirting. Both of us slightly smiling.
