It took Anna about five minutes to finish her first drink.

I finished my second.

Chuck had another round ready to go for us.

As I lifted my glass, Anna grabbed my arm.

“Wait,” she said.

She smiled at me.

Her eyes were fuzzy and buzzed.

Already, baby? Oh… damn…

“We need a proper cheers,” she said.

“Then go for it.”

“No. You do it.”

“You want me to do it? Okay. Cheers to you, Anna. To Dr. Autumn.”

“No…”

“Hold on,” I said. “Cheers to Dr. Autumn. To everything you’ve accomplished. You set out on a path and committed to it.”

“Same for you,” she said. “Famous hockey player.”

“I’m more famous for being violent than playing hockey.”

“At least that brought us back together.”

Anna inched back, realizing what she said.

“I meant… cheers.”

“Cheers, Anna,” I said.

We touched glasses.

She chugged half of her next drink and stood up.

She slapped her hand to the bar.

“Let’s do it,” she said.

“What are we doing?”

“Darts.”

“You really wanted to meet me to do this?”

Anna inched closer to me. “No.”

She turned and walked toward the dartboard.

I grabbed our beers and followed.
