“Greeting our guest,” Bethany said in a breathless voice.
“Bethany. Freeze.”
Bethany listened.
Freezing halfway across the room.
“Joe,” Anna said. “Come with me. Right now.”
I looked at her and growled deep in my throat.
I walked to Anna’s office and she led the way in.
“I’m glad we can meet in person like this,” I said to her as she shut the door. “Our last conversation didn’t end the way I had hoped.”
“Joe,” Anna said.
She made a gesture with her eyes.
Making them wide. Wiggling her eyes.
I stepped closer to her. I whispered, “What is it?”
Anna inched back.
I reached for her and she slinked out of the way.

Ellen Verwert sat in the chair I had sat in, legs crossed, staring.
Looking rich and dangerous.
“Ellen,” I said.
“Joe,” Ellen said.
“Ellen wanted to visit us today,” Anna said as she walked behind her desk. “To check in on things.”
“I had to see it for myself,” Ellen said. “See you arriving for a session. I heard you both decided to move these meetings from our offices to here. I wasn’t sure if that was a stubborn ploy on your part, Joe.”
“Nothing like sitting in a windowless, abandoned office to open up about your feelings,” I said.
Ellen laughed. She stood up. “Desperate times, Joe. You understand, right?”
“Of course I do,” I said. “Look at me. I’m here. And I’m sure Dr. Autumn would agree that I’ve been diligent to show up to every appointment.”
“That’s true,” Anna said.
“I have to say, I am thrilled that you two are taking this so serious,” Ellen said. “Well, of course you take it seriously, Dr. Autumn. But I appreciate you dealing with Joe here. He can be a mean grump.”
Anna smiled.
“I’m just keeping everyone on their toes,” I said. “And, hey, I haven’t thrown anyone through a window this week.”
“Wonderful news, Joe,” Ellen said. “I’m not exactly thrilled about you joining the team for the upcoming road trip. But I’m willing to keep my mouth shut now that I know Dr. Autumn will be going too.”
